Hedgehog Facts. The hedgehog was named because of its peculiar foraging methods. These animals root through hedges and other undergrowth in search of the small creatures that compose the bulk of their diet—insects, worms, centipedes, snails, mice, frogs, and snakes. As a hedgehog picks its way through the hedges it emits piglike grunts—thus, the hedgehog. Some people consider hedgehogs useful pets because they prey on many common garden pests. While on the hunt, they rely upon their senses of hearing and smell because their eyesight is weak. Defensive Adaptations and Hibernation Hedgehogs have a coat of stiff, sharp spines. If attacked they will curl into a prickly and unappetizing ball that deters most predators. They usually sleep in this position during the day and awaken to search for food at night. Located in the center of the former Champagne front which extended from Reims to Argonne, the monument commemorates the battles from September 1914 to October 1918.It was erected in 1924 to honor the deaths of the Armies of Champagne at the initiative of General Gouraud, commanding the IVth Army.Inside, the bones of 10,000 soldiers, most of them anonymous, rest in a burial crypt.By climbing a few steps we reach the foot of the base from where we discover a vast panorama of the former Champagne front. The terrain still bears the marks of combat: trenches, craters, trenches... At the top, a sculpture represents 3 patrolmen in the guise of General Gouraud, Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt, son of the President, killed in 1918 in the Tardenois and the sculptor's own brother who fell at Chemin des Dames.
